Preventing Struck-By Injury on Construction Sites

Struck-by incidents are the 2nd leading cause of death among construction workers, and the leading cause of nonfatal injuries in the construction industry.[1]

This week is National Stand-Down to Prevent Struck-by Incidents and a perfect opportunity for all of us in and out of the construction industry to re-assess our safety practices and ask ourselves “Am I doing all I can do to prevent injuries?”

Whether you are a worker, contractor, or person walking or driving through a construction zone – you can make a difference by becoming more aware of the potential risks and supporting the initiative.

This week all of us in the construction industry are asked to:

  • STOP work. Take a moment to gather workers on your job site.
  • TALK about hazards and potential risks that could cause harm.
  • ACT on what you learn. Highlight safety solutions that are designed to reduce risk.

With over 20 years in the safety consulting “space” we’ve witnessed many struck-by injuries that were preventable. We know from our experience that a common and recurring “problem” contributing to construction related injury is a lack of effective perimeter security. Low quality, deteriorating and tipping construction fencing that is easily breeched creates risk.

On the other hand, sturdy construction-grade™ concrete barrier perimeter control protects workers from outside influences they have no control over like oncoming vehicles. Barrier fencing is also a safe and effective way to protect pedestrians that need to walk around construction perimeters.

Privacy screening on fencing can also keep materials within the construction project confines and flying debris from going thru the chain link.
